Overview

We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join a major Utilities organisation on a contract basis. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, building, and optimising modern cloud-based data platforms, enabling business intelligence, analytics, and operational reporting across the organisation.

This role requires strong expertise in Snowflake and Microsoft Azure data services, alongside experience working within the Utilities sector. The position offers a hybrid working model, with occasional travel to UK offices as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Build and optimise enterprise data solutions using Snowflake and Azure cloud technologies.
  • Develop and manage data ingestion frameworks from multiple internal and external data sources.
  • Implement data modelling solutions to support reporting, analytics, and operational use cases.
  • Ensure data quality, integrity, governance, and security standards are maintained.
  • Collaborate with Data Architects, Business Analysts, Data Scientists, and business stakeholders.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise data platform performance and reliability.
  • Support CI/CD deployment processes and infrastructure automation.
  • Contribute to cloud migration and data modernisation initiatives.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation and data engineering standards.

Required Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer in enterprise-scale environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Snowflake Data Cloud.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Azure data services, including:
    • Azure Data Factory (ADF)
    • Azure Synapse Analytics
    • Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS)
    • Azure SQL
    • Azure DevOps
  • Strong SQL development and query optimisation skills.
  • Experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines.
  • Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and dimensional modelling.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages for data engineering tasks.
  • Experience implementing data governance, security, and data quality controls.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Previous experience working within the UK Utilities sector.

Desirable

  • Experience with real-time or streaming data solutions.
  • Knowledge of Power BI and wider Microsoft data ecosystem.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM templates, Bicep).
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery methodologies.
  • Azure certifications and/or Snowflake certifications.
