Principal Engineer – Body Structures in Surrey

General Characteristics:
- Applies a thorough knowledge of current principles and practices of engineering as related to the business and its projects
- Leads significant project tasks and/or oversees elements of multiple projects with respect to a functional area
Typical Technical Responsibilities:
- Serves as a technical specialist for the organisation in the application of advanced concepts, principles, and methods in an assigned area
- Serves as technical authority on one or more functional areas across multiple programmes
- Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates assignments
- Keeps informed of new methods and developments affecting the organisation, providing recommendations for new practices
Managerial Responsibilities:
- Supervises staff allocated to specific assignments
- Plans , schedules, or coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for multiple major projects, or is responsible for an entire project functional area
- Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies and performance measures
Direction Received:
- Receives administrative supervision with assignments being given in terms of broad general objectives and bounds
Communication skills:
- Routinely interacts with clients, customers, officials, contractors and others
- Leads project meetings and delivers presentations
- Represents the organisation and maintains liaison with individuals in specific contexts
Typical Experience:
- Engineering council professional registration
- Member of professional practice organisation
- Personally managed CPD portfolio
- Serves on local professional committees
Departmental Responsibilities:
- Ownership of relevant section
- 3D package modelling
- Manage interface with styling
- Engineering responsibility (including design and release) of full vehicle body systems:
- Occupant cell
- Crash management
- Sub frames
- Structural floors
- Design for manufacture and assembly for responsible components
- Ensuring responsible designs meet legal compliance
- Work Package Management
- Design Sizing Analysis
- Sub system loads
- Joints and interfaces
- Materials selection
- Bolt calculations
- Cost, timing and mass
Miscellaneous:
- Identify and highlight any areas for continuous improvement
- Ensure that your technical knowledge and expertise is kept up to date
- Mentor and support professional development of all colleagues, particularly junior staff
- To perform any other duties that may well be reasonably expected within the remit of the role
- To ensure compliance with the Health, Safety and Environmental Policy requirements within areas of responsibility
Remuneration:
- Hours: 40 hours - Full time in office (4 flexi WFH days per month)- Managers discretion
