As the Mechanical Design Engineer, you will get the chance to develop and propose Concept Designs as well as support the resolution of issues for the existing product portfolio by working alongside a market-leading company.
Your Key Responsibilities will include:
- Contribute to the planning, control, and delivery of projects taking into account risk
- management, quality, and SHE in line with requirements and processes.
- Input to cross-functional projects/investigations.
- Participate in collaborative ventures at a technical level.
- Support the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids in the area(s) of
- expertise to facilitate the development of the highest quality bids.
- Participate in developing, maintaining, and modifying engineering processes and procedures
- in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational needs.
- Manage assigned budgets for own elements of work.
- Analysis of customer requirements and their subsequent decomposition into functional
- system and sub-system design requirements.
- Prepare specifications and develop designs in line with requirements and all quality and
- technical standards.
- Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of
- technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the
- resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.
- Definition and control of interfaces via interface control drawings and space envelopes.
- The generation of design and/or manufacturing detailed design CAD models and drawings.
- Undertake the validation of systems/equipment which may include the generation of test
- schedules, test and integration plans, and the writing/investigation of test problem reports.
- The generation and review of technical reports
Ensure that designs produced consider the following:
- Design safety
- Design for Manufacture assembly, dis-assembly and end-of-life processing (BS8887 (MADE))
- Design to cost, reliability, and maintainability.
- Assist in trade studies and supplier selection, including:
- Equipment/supplier surveys and selection.
- The generation of system procurement specifications and schedules of work.
- Act as a point of contact with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas of engineering
- matters, to resolve problems and issues, and to maintain awareness in both parties of
- priorities and objectives.
- Participation in internal and external meetings or design reviews with the customer.
Key skills
- 3D CAD (Ideally PTC Creo) experience
- Structural / Stress analysis (MS Excel, Mathcad, FEA {PTC Simulate or Ansys})
- Working knowledge of technical office process standards and standard instructions (IBMS
- and LCM)
- Health and Safety awareness, including Product Safety
- Working knowledge of drawing standards and the application of geometric tolerances.
- Product Life cycle awareness of the needs of downstream users to maximise the re-use of
- engineering data and minimise re-work to suit Manufacture and through-life support.
- Familiarity with the CAD (CREO), PDM tools (TeamCenter), and the links to the ERP system
- (SAP).
- The Mechanical Design Engineer will have been educated to a degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline with at least 6+ years of experience within an engineering environment.
