We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Pumps Engineer Or Lead, to be involved in an industry leading, cutting-edge project for a new type of power station.

Job Purpose:

The Pumps Engineer / Lead will work within cross functional teams and with the global supply chain to deliver product designs for components within the scope of the role. The role requires that the candidate work to integrate all factors into the design process to define the product definition and supporting information.

The role will work on concept product development all through the product lifecycle and be part of the team with product ownership of assigned scope. This will involve working in developing, iterative and ambiguous environments and it is essential the candidate can handle this stage of the product lifecycle.

The candidate shall have practical experience of pump design and analysis, with knowledge of the different types, and how they work within a fluid system solution. It is preferable (mandated for a Lead Role) that the candidate have experience of pumps within nuclear applications, including experience with reactor coolant pumps.

This role will be delivered through a combination of direct contribution (Engineer role) or through the combination of direct contribution, in addition to providing leadership and delegation of work packages into the wider team (Lead Role). The candidate will be assessed for their ability to meet either or both roles through the application process.

Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role:

Engineer Role:

  • Deliver product definitions in line with best practice and to standard policies and processes, to deliver robust, low-cost products that are optimised in line with the supply chain.
  • Generate creative solutions to challenges, based on a balance and trade off the project drivers, technical and non-technical requirements.
  • Identify and mitigate risks and opportunities in a proactive manner.
  • Deliver product design technical attributes that meet the customer requirements in respect of quality, time & cost and embedding the principles of the SMR in terms of commoditisation, standardisation, and simplification.
  • Contribute to the delivery of the overall product definition, integrated within all supporting functions.
  • Deliver the fully integrated digital design definition for the assigned scope.
  • Ensure product development is in line with best practice and to standard policies and processes, to deliver robust, low-cost products that are optimised in line with supply chain and manufacturing capability which integrate both operational experience and lessons learnt.
  • Work across the power station islands, where demanded, to deliver standardisation and a commoditised approach to product development.
  • Deliver product development to achieve the required maturity to support the delivery, plant integration, business, and customer requirements.
  • Represent the component team and SMR programme on the global stage.

Lead Role:

  • As above, plus.
  • Having experience of Pressurised Water Reactor systems and interfacing components.
  • Understanding the structure of a nuclear safety case.
  • Providing technical leadership, generate, and manage programmes, costs & risks, and support the development and growth of a design engineering team for the assigned scope of work.
  • Manage the overall product development programme for assigned scope, including leading a variety of review gates.
  • Capable of generating/recording lessons learnt and relevant good practice within the pumps team.

The Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Product knowledge of Pumps
  • A detailed understanding of pump characteristics and curves, and their interactions with the system parameters.
  • Experience with electromechanical equipment.
  • A detailed understanding of pump components (including those of the wider pump motor unit), and their influences on each other.
  • Ability to perform mechanical and hydraulic analysis of different designs.
  • Experience of defining pump specific requirements to generate relevant specifications, including requirements for design qualification.
  • Experience of pumps within a Pressurised Water Reactor plant (Lead Role).
  • Experience of developing a safety case for safety critical pumps (Lead Role).
  1. Intelligent Customer & Capability:
  • Experience in reviewing technical and commercial bids and making recommendations on supply chain selections.
  • Experience working with and visiting suppliers to develop capability and design/manufacturing solutions to meet requirements.
  • Experience reviewing/assessing vendor documentation, including calculations and drawings.
  • Capable of building good working relationships with the supply chain.
  • Experience with generating internal capability (including tool sets) to ensure a clear understanding of the pump designs to back check and accept solutions from manufacturers.
  1. Pump Test Programmes & Through-Life:
  • Experience of working with/generating pump test specifications.
  • Experience of leading on Verification and Validation activities associated with pump test programmes (Lead Role).
  • It is preferable to understand the through-life activities necessary for the upkeep and maintenance of pumps to enable the generation of the relevant schedules and costs (expected for Lead Role).

Qualifications & Training:

  • BEng or MEng in process, mechanical or chemical engineering (or equivalent technical experience).
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards it.
  • Proven relevant product design experience.

Pay and Benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £40,000-£60,000 plus:-

  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance - £2200, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days
