The plant will be responsible for encasing nuclear waste from the original waste plants in concrete, allowing for safe storage in a modern facility. Primarily, the plant will be handling waste from the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo, which is a top priority for clean-up by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

In addition to the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo, the Box Encapsulation Plant will also receive and process waste from the First-Generation Magnox Storage Pond, the Pile Fuel Storage Pond, and the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo. The BEP Joint Venture project aims to design and construct the plant to meet the requirements of the contract, ensuring that the waste conditioning process is carried out efficiently and in line with the needs of the Employer and stakeholders of the project.
