Lead Specialist Materials Laboratory in Oxfordshire

Responsibilities:

  • Define and carry out test plans and material investigations using specialist testing and analytical methods.
  • Primary focus is on vehicle and supplied parts paint processes (e.g. colour assessment and approval, defect analysis, contamination and functionality testing) and vehicle body corrosion test methods (e.g. vehicle body destructive testing, sealant/sound proofing/foam/PVC audits, adhesive bonding evaluation).
  • Recommend appropriate actions to deliver robust problem resolution activities within the specified discipline.
  • Provide specialist materials technical support and knowledge to all relevant process partners.
  • Determine the severity of problems and prioritise actions in the context of the overall business implications.
  • Execute technical process control of materials-related production processes.
  • Approve materials, components and processes for use in production to ensure that materials technology and related production processes all adhere to BMW Group policies, requirements, procedures and guidelines.
  • Support the development of containment solutions and take a leading role in the elimination of materials related problems.
  • Ensure the continuous improvement of processes and working practices.
  • Complete all work in accordance with procedures, relevant Group Standards and risk assessments.
  • Ensure the continuous improvement of processes and working practices, including evaluation of current laboratory practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Responsible for planning procurement, owning and organising the service and calibration of specialist equipment.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Hands-on experience of laboratory-based material analysis.
  • Proven experience in automotive production.
  • Science based education or technical apprenticeship and experience relevant to job role.
  • Very good communication and presentation skills.
  • High degree of self-motivation and reliability essential.
  • Good IT skills essential.
  • Leadership ability, flexible attitude.
  • Capable of working alone or in a multi-functional team.
  • In-depth knowledge of problem resolution techniques and / or project management.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety and Environmental impacts.
  • Normal colour vision.
  • Valid UK driving licence.
