Survey Engineer (Rail)

Location: Hybrid - a mix of site, office and home working (Various locations across UK - Swindon, Cardiff, Birmingham, York
Travel: Business expenses and hire car provided for work-related travel

We're looking for an experienced Survey Engineer with a strong background in railway infrastructure surveys to join our growing team. If you enjoy working across a variety of rail projects and have the technical expertise to deliver high-quality survey solutions, we'd like to hear from you.

Security Requirements

Applicants must hold (or be able to obtain):

  • BPSS clearance
  • PTS certification
  • AC and DC competencies

What you'll be doing

You'll play a key role in delivering accurate survey information to support major rail infrastructure projects by:

  • Leading topographical and rail infrastructure surveys
  • Setting up and maintaining survey control networks
  • Managing GNSS survey control and coordinate transformations (including SnakeGrid)
  • Processing and validating point cloud data
  • Producing CAD drawings and survey deliverables
  • Reviewing survey outputs to ensure quality and technical compliance
  • Providing technical advice to project teams
  • Working with third-party survey providers where required
  • Helping improve survey methods, standards and best practice

What we're looking for

Essential:

  • Significant experience in railway surveying
  • Experience leading track and rail infrastructure surveys
  • Strong knowledge of topographical surveying techniques
  • Experience with GNSS control networks and SnakeGrid
  • Point cloud processing and interpretation experience
  • CAD and point cloud software skills
  • Ability to review and assure survey outputs
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification
  • Experience working to Network Rail standards

Desirable:

  • Degree in Surveying or a related subject
  • Chartered status (or working towards it)
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CICES
  • Experience on major rail enhancement or renewals projects
  • Knowledge of railway safety and risk management
  • Experience producing survey specifications or technical guidance

What you'll deliver

You'll be responsible for producing:

  • Topographical survey data
  • Control network documentation
  • Point cloud models and processed datasets
  • CAD drawings
  • Survey assurance reports
  • Technical recommendations
  • Quality and compliance documentation

About You

You're an experienced rail survey professional who can work independently, solve technical challenges and collaborate effectively with clients and project teams. You take pride in delivering high-quality survey information that supports the safe and successful delivery of railway infrastructure projects.
