Highways Engineer (Maintenance and Design)

Location: Doncaster (Hybrid - minimum 3 days per week in the office, plus site visits)
Rate: £45 per hour (Inside IR35)
Contract: Until April 2027
Start Date: Immediate

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Highways Maintenance Design Engineer to support a busy highways maintenance programme in Doncaster.

You will manage highways maintenance schemes from initial investigation and design through to procurement, construction and completion. This is a hands-on role combining office-based design work with regular site visits and construction support.

Key Responsibilities

• Investigate highway network issues and identify suitable maintenance solutions.

• Prepare highway maintenance designs and technical documentation.

• Produce bills of quantities, specifications and tender documents.

• Support procurement and construction activities.

• Carry out site supervision, setting-out, levelling and site measurements.

• Respond to technical queries during construction.

• Manage multiple schemes from initial concept through to completion.

Essential Requirements

• Proven experience in highways maintenance design and scheme delivery.

• Experience working on existing highway networks rather than solely new developments.

• Ability to manage projects from initial investigation through to construction and completion.

• Experience with levelling, site measurements and setting-out.

• Experience preparing bills of quantities and tender documentation.

• Strong site supervision and construction support experience.

• Ability to work independently and manage multiple schemes.

Local authority highways experience and relevant engineering qualifications are desirable.
