Job Description

Purchase Cost Estimating Engineer
Chelmsford, Essex
£36,000 - £43,000

The successful candidate will prepare estimates (using cost models) for new programmes, drive quoted part and tooling costs, recommend process/design improvements to optimise part cost and ensure lowest pricing via fact-based negotiations.

You will also be responsible for collecting and analysing data and information in order to estimate costs associated with manufacturing a given part/product.

Key Responsibilities:
" Identify and quantify cost factors, such as production time and raw material, equipment, and labour expenses and determine cost estimate part/component targets during the Pursuit (pre-G#0 to G#2), Forward Model (G#2 to G#6) and Current model (serial production) product lifecycle, recommending cost effective solutions accordingly.
" Generate and maintain commodity by commodity cost database with market driven cost drivers.
" Gather proposals, specifications and related documents and liaise with stakeholders in order to convert specifications to cost estimates for new and current products.
" Utilise cost methodologies and tools and appropriate software models and packages to prepare and maintain reliable and accurate data.
" Establish cost estimates of production processes and tooling costs and review alternatives or put forward recommendations for improvement (throughout the product lifecycle).
" Assess cost effectiveness of products and track actual costs relative to budget and report status on a regular basis to ensure costs are in line with forecasts.
" Monitor and review data and information to detect or assess problems.
" Investigate and identify cost reduction opportunities through cost analysis review.
" Contribute to cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures and monitor trends.
" Prepare cost and expenditure statements, reports and other necessary documentation at regular intervals to share with others in the business.
" Support all purchasing activities in cost estimating and take a proactive approach towards improvements.


" Relevant business/commercial or manufacturing/engineering degree preferred or HND or NVQ Technician Diploma levels 4-5 qualification.
" Proven experience of cost estimating - ideally in an automotive, manufacturing or engineering environment
" Good IT systems knowledge (Excel) and experienced in the use of spreadsheets, estimating pricing models and cost management tools.
" Able to show evidence of adding value and cost optimisation.
" Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
" Experienced in estimating techniques.
" Knowledge and understanding of a variety of manufacturing/automotive processes and components (particularly 'mechanical' - Plastics and Metal) and ability to evaluate and analyse associated costs.
" Membership of an appropriate professional body would be advantageous.
" Candidates who can speak German would be at a distinct advantage
