Job Title: Principal Systems Engineer
Location: Southampton
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000

My client, a leading Defence and Aerospace company, require a Systems Engineer to join their team in Southampton on a permanent basis. If you are an accomplished Systems Engineer with experience in working on Electronic Warfare, Sonar, Signal Processing or Electronics systems, my client will want to see your CV!

Job Description
Systems engineering and project engineering lead role for development projects in high performance infrared focal plane array detectors. The role covers the full product life cycle from early customer engagement and concept development through prototype verification to handing over a fully qualified product to manufacturing.

Key Responsibility Areas
" To provide leadership to a technical team with a broad range of physics, mechanical and electronics skills.
" Responsible for the integrity and suitability of the design and for leading the life-cycle management of the product, including design reviews, verification, and qualification activities.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
" Good degree or equivalent in Physics or relevant Engineering discipline (Electronics, Systems etc).
" MSc or PhD advantageous.Skills and experience
" Technical leadership, communications, problem solving, project planning, and technical writing skills.
" A high degree of numeracy is required, together with a track record of technical leadership in product development and an ability to negotiate, build consensus and influence effectively.
" Industrial experience in a related technical field or in systems engineering is highly desirable.
Knowledge and competencies
" Ability to draw clear conclusions from complex numerical data.
" Ability to apply a range of physical principles (electrical, thermal, mechanical, optical) to a wide range of technological problems.
" To be able to coordinate efforts in, and over time, to lead the team's understanding in some of the following areas: silicon IC processes and design procedures, semiconductor manufacturing and design, infrared detectors and their applications, qualification procedures for military applications, cryogenic techniques.
" Strong communicator, clear thinking and organised problem solver.

Intrinsic Factors
" Mainly office based, but with some travel in the UK and occasional overseas travel to meet customers.
" Moderately heavy display screen use.
" Normal working is 37hrs/ 5 days per week but with project demands occasionally demanding longer hours and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
