Mechanical Engineer - Tolerance Analysis

An opportunity has become available for a Mechanical Engineer to join the drug delivery device department of a global bio-medical company in Cambridge. Candidates will need CAD experience aswell as experience using stress and tolerance analysis hand calculations.

Mechanical Engineer

£30,000 - £45,000 depending on the candidate.

Location Cambridge

Are you a Graduate mechanical engineer with a couple of year proven ability, or perhaps an engineer who is good at providing engineering analysis and would be keen to provide design support in the medical sector?

The ideal candidate will be on the early stages of their career, looking to develop their skills within an established team. The successful candidate will need to be good at tolerance analysis, stress analysis and hand calculations.

The successful engineer will be working as part of a friendly and well-motivated team managing the development of drug delivery devices, this role may include tasks from all stages of device development from user requirement capture through analysis, testing, validation, manufacture and complaints investigations.

This role requires an engineer who isn't afraid to achieve, question, compare, and predict and foreseeing problems. This role is more focused towards engineering rather than design, although an understanding of CAD (Pro E or Solidworks) would be ideal.

Role Functions
" Project engineer responsible for the delivery of an effective, documented design
" Support design specification selection
" Apply theoretical engineering knowledge (e.g. forces, friction, mechanism analysis, materials) to develop, analyse and critique design concepts and solutions
" Carry out tolerance analysis of designs to assess critical functions
" Interrogate 3D CAD models
" Assess supplier analyses and test results in the light of design functionality
" Perform investigative laboratory testing
" Produce viable design solutions in response to specific requirements or specifications
" Support and plan investigative HF studies
" Communicate potential design risks for wider evaluation by the project team.
" Support design reviews, both internal and with suppliers
" Create documentation to support medical device development and industrialization
" Interact effectively with suppliers and other groups

Capabilities and Knowledge
Essential
" Some experience of CAD (preferably Pro-Engineer/Creo or Solidworks) and associated document management systems
" Hand calculations of stress and tolerance analysis
" Experience of using risk assessment tools including FMEA
" Management and prioritisation of project tasks
" Excellent communication skills including writing clear reports, documents and presentations
" Understanding of quality management systems including GAMP

Desirable
" Interpretation of FEA
" Management of suppliers
" Knowledge of usability / human factors
" Knowledge of injection moulding

Education and Experience
" Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
" Ideally 2 years relevant experience
" Experience of medical device development would be a benefit

Person
" Practical, analytical, pragmatic
" Capable of both working in a team and leading own independent work through to a conclusion
" Communicates well with internal and external team members. Articulates ideas and concepts clearly to all levels and technical abilities
" Able to learn and understand new concepts quickly

The role requires interaction with suppliers and may require occasional travel, although this role is based near Cambridge.
