Job Description

Our client's firmware team in Luton is looking for an FPGA Firmware Engineer to strengthen the currently highly skilled function with expertise in high performance FPGA design, DSP algorithm development, and highly integrated SoC platforms. The successful candidate will have a track record in the design of complex FPGAs.

As a leading provider of Electronic Warfare (EW) capability in Europe and a major player in the global market, our client designs, develops and manufactures self-protection systems that are in operation on rotary and fixed wing platforms around the world, most notably the Apache, Chinook and Eurofighter Typhoon.

Within the firmware discipline we exploit the rapid technological advances in programmable technology to develop better, cheaper products and get them to market rapidly. You will be challenged to develop demonstrably robust designs to function in harsh environments over a lifetime of uses

Skills, qualifications & knowledge

Highly skilled in the field of FPGA design and verification:
" Requirements capture, module Interface Documents and procurement specifications.
" Design of self-checking test benches using VHDL or Verilog
" VHDL/Verilog based FPGA design
" High performance design techniques
" Specification of timing constraints and static timing analysis.
" Advanced knowledge of FPGA synthesis and implementation.
" Good appreciation of Firmware development to a formal process for high integrity applications e.g. RTCA DO-254
" Experience of de-bugging and testing firmware designs
" Support system integration and qualification activities

For principal levels:
" Work Package Management and Team Leadership Experience

Other desirable skills/experience:
" Version Control tools such as subversion or git
" Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
" System modelling tools such as MATLAB and Simulink
" Programming/scripting languages eg. C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, TCL etc.
" System on Chip development soft/hard core processors
" Ethernet and network protocols

Key responsibility areas

" Experienced in the principles of firmware design and capable of carrying out FPGA design work using a structured design process.
" Keep up to date on latest technologies.
" Have the ability to analyse system level documents and derive detailed FPGA requirements under own initiative.
" Design of Complex FPGA devices utilising the latest FPGA technologies.
For principal levels:
" Independent Firmware Assessments within peer group of complex firmware designs
Design Review Chair for low complexity Designs
