When Leon joined ARM 16 years ago, it was obvious he would go places. I’ve watched him on his career journey, observed how he has used his knowledge, experience and relationship-building skills to help grow the business. It’s been a joy seeing him progress.
The mere mention of his name receives a warm response throughout the Group. It’s not often that a managing director is so universally liked and highly-respected.
Which is why it’s fantastic that Leon has been recognised outside ARM by one of the industry’s leading magazines: he has been shortlisted in the Recruiter Awards 2017 for Agency Recruitment Leader of the Year.
This prestigious category celebrates leaders who have ‘made the most significant influence on the profession, their recruitment business, the industry and demonstrated exemplary leadership’.
Among Leon’s many achievements in the last year, he developed the Apprentice Academy, was instrumental in revamping ARM’s sourcing practices and has ensured it’s a great place to work.
Throughout this, Leon has remained approachable, is a fantastic ambassador for the business, and an incredible role model and mentor.
A stiff drink
To make the shortlist, Leon was required to attend a Dragon’s Den-esque interview, where he was questioned by a panel of four judges, starting with an ‘elevator pitch’ about the business. The session was very intense, by all accounts. However, being so passionate about both ARM and the people that work for him, Leon enjoyed being able to articulate all the great things about the company.
For half an hour, the panel asked Leon to talk about his leadership style, his achievements and what he might have done differently. Leon’s reaction afterwards: “I’m going for a stiff drink!”
He clearly impressed the panel, though, and is thrilled to be shortlisted. He’s also characteristically generous and modest, too.
“There is no way I could have achieved the successes in my career without having a large number of people to help me along the way - from colleagues, managers and shareholders,” he said. “When there are tough times, you need a strong team around you, so having people you trust and respect is critical.”
Come what May
I should add that ARM was also shortlisted for Best Construction & Engineering Recruitment Agency, which is an incredible achievement and a great acknowledgement for us all. In the meantime, we’ll need to be patient until the awards show itself, which takes place on 3 May at Grosvenor House in London.
One thing is certain, though. Leon is a great example of someone who has risen through the ranks; working hard, continuously developing and following that recruiter career path to senior management. He’s not only an inspiration, not only an exemplary leader, but also an all-round nice bloke. I’m delighted and thrilled that he’s received this truly-deserved recognition.
“I’m immensely proud to work with some of the most talented, passionate people in the recruitment sector,” he told me.
Leon, we’re immensely proud to work with you, too.
