Last Saturday, 8 October, the tenth anniversary RailStaff Awards took place at the Ricoh Stadium in Coventry. This prestigious event, as the website itself declares, ‘celebrates all of the people that work within the industry, that often go unnoticed or without recognition’. It is a chance to publicly thank all of the people who keep Britain’s railways going, from the station staff and onboard cleaners, to the engineers, drivers – and did someone say rail recruitment consultants?
It might seem a mighty big statement, but many of those people wouldn’t be there without the help of a specialist rail recruiter, someone like ARM’s own Head of Rail, Adam Razzell, who was up for an award.
If you don’t know Adam, you won’t know that he developed his desk singlehandedly as a junior consultant, four years ago. He worked tirelessly to build a reputation within the industry and to become not only a trusted partner, but the first port of call for sourcing high calibre rail talent.
Adam’s relentless recruiting efforts were recognised by his peers, who nominated him for the Recruiter/HR Person or Team of the Year award. He was later confirmed as a finalist and that brings us back to Saturday.
The award goes to…
The stage was set; the theme: Hollywood meets Bollywood. The desert was chocolate, the entertainment sublime and the (ARM-sponsored) photobooth amused all. A little after 10pm, it was time for Adam’s category to be announced. Everyone was on tenterhooks at the nominees’ names were read out. And the winner was…Adam Razzell! We asked him a few questions…
How did you feel prior to the awards?
Excited, being shortlisted for the awards was a great feeling and I was just looking forward to a great night ahead!
And how about when your name was revealed as the winner?
Proud and humbled. To have your clients, contractors, friends and colleagues recognise your work is a great feeling.
What is it about the rail sector that you’re so passionate about?
Community! The rail industry is a community; everyone knows everyone, and everyone is willing to help you in any way they can. I would never have the knowledge I do without the help of my clients and contractors. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
If you could send a message to Adam Razzell, junior consultant, just starting out in rail, what would you say?
Listen more. I have made a few mistakes along the way, as we all do, but one thing I would do is spend more time listening to advice along the way!
Commenting on the news, Corporate Services Divisional Managing Director, Leon Howgill said: “I’m extremely proud of Adam. To be recognised by the industry you recruit within is a tremendous accolade for Adam and ARM.”
We couldn’t be more proud that Adam won, he has worked so hard and helped place so many people into their dream rail roles. Many congratulations! (Nominations are already open for 2017, just saying…)
