  • UK and Europe

Business needs:

  • Requirement for Technical Superintendents following a win of management contracts across several vessels

  • Attracting professional candidates with the right skill sets in a niche market

  • An urgent recruitment need with the imminent arrival of the vessels

ARM’s impact:

  • First placement confirmed only 20 days after initial contact

  • Five permanent placements arranged three months after initial contact

Project history:

ARM rapidly supported global maritime service provider V Ships with an urgent recruitment need for several Technical Superintendents, with varying levels of seniority. Due to the company’s Glasgow office winning management contracts across several vessels, project timescales were very tight.

In addition, the Technical Superintendent market lacks high numbers of suitable candidates. The results were that V Ships faced a number of challenges to overcome, which is when the company turned to us for assistance.

Attracting the right skill set of candidates and finding the right level of salary was an initial challenge. Candidates already holding the position with the required experience elsewhere in the UK would, in all likelihood, already be on very similar salaries and benefits.

With only a handful of similar companies in Glasgow utilising the required type of professionals, V Ships also appreciated it would need to look further afield within the UK and Europe, narrowing the search to those open to relocation. This was complicated further by the comparatively high taxation and living costs in the UK, especially for candidates sourced from outside the country.

How we help V Ships:

With the arrival of the vessels pending, the positions had to be filled very rapidly. Only 20 days after the initial contact, the ARM team had secured the first offer for an immediate starter and the candidate started at V Ships’ office just nine days later.

From the first date of contact to exactly three months and a day later, ARM placed five permanent members of staff, all with immediate availability. Ultimately, four of these professionals agreed to relocate to take up their roles.

The ARM solution:

Having learnt of this urgent requirement, our team was galvanized into action and decisions were made to ensure we maintained a lead ahead of V Ships’ competitors with regards to sourcing the right professionals quickly and efficiently.

To streamline the process, we put a number of measures in place. This included prioritising the roles by quantity and urgency, as well as rapidly sending speculative CV’s to V Ships to ensure accuracy in our search.

We created a constant flow of potential candidates, which resulted in a broad selection of potential people. Our team also arranged terms once the first placement had been secured, helping to form a strong business relationship from the outset.
