Highways Engineer

Due to ongoing success, an excellent organisation are looking to further develop their Highways Design Team based in Portsmouth.

They are looking for a Highways Engineer to assist in successfully designing and delivering highway schemes, while supporting Senior Engineers from inception through to completion. Schemes will range from small junction improvements through to multimillion pound major projects.

 

Your role will involve:

  • Proposing scheme options and prepare designs from inception through to detailed design and implementation.
  • Ensuring designs are in accordance with current national and local design standards and policies e.g. DMRB (Design Manual for Roads and Bridges).
  • Managing projects to establish and deliver arranged solutions that meet engineering and environmental considerations as part of an achievable scheme programmes.
  • Managing external consultants and project staff to ensure targets are achieved.
  • Preparing estimates, monitoring and reviewing project costs to ensure completion within agreed budgets; including works, predicted maintenance costs and design/site supervision fees.
  • Assisting in the preparation, tendering and assessment of contract documentation to ensure the construction of works on site are to programme and within budget.
  • Providing technical input and project management throughout the construction period.
  • Represent the team and wider company at meetings, to assist and carry out consultations on scheme proposals and to advise members as necessary.
  • Liaising with project client, project team, consultants and the general public where necessary; preparing reports as required.
  • Maintaining your technical expertise in new methods and technologies, whilst encouraging and assisting more junior members of staff to pursue their own personal development.

 

You will ideally:

  • Be Educated to HND or degree level in Civil Engineering (or other relevant subject)
  • Have an appropriate membership with a professional body e.g. MICE, MCIHT.
  • A suitable project management qualification would also be beneficial e.g. Prince 2.
  • Have previous experience of highways design and/or delivery in a private or public sector environment.
  • Competency with relevant software such as AutoCAD, Civils 3D, Bentley MX etc.
  • Have experience of engineering projects with values up to £500,000 from initiation through to completion.
  • Be able to consistently deliver projects on time and within budget; including target setting, monitoring progress and allocating resources.
  • Have good experience of contract documentation preparation.
  • Have good communication and reporting skills enabling efficient liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Be happy to advise and mentor more junior engineers.
