Principal Hardware / Electronics Engineer
Our client has a rich heritage of providing leading systems capability and equipment for the Air, Land, Sea and Space domains.
The Southampton site hosts the Infra-Red Centre of Excellence for the design, development and manufacture of infrared detectors for commercial, industrial, space and military applications.
Main Purpose of the Job
To support both new products and in-house test, our client develops electronics for the company's range of detectors. These electronics usually require digitisation of an analogue signal and data processing of the digitised stream. An FPGA is usually used as the timing and data processing engine.
They are going through a significant and exciting period of new cutting edge product development with a new project start early 2018 and require additional resource to support this activity, specifically in the area of the development of deliverable electronics.

" Electronics schematic design, layout, and simulation
" Validation of designs against requirements
" Definition of test parameters
" Integration and validation at system level
" Preparation of technical documentation and reports
" Adherence to company governance and quality processes
Key Skills and Experience required
¢ Degree in Electronics Engineering (or equivalent)
¢ Management of electronics design projects to achieve requirements within cost and time
¢ Use of Schematic Capture tools (Mentor Graphics, Proteus or equivalent)
¢ Ability to communicate technical information within the company and to customers
¢ Demonstrate evidence of good organisation, planning, cost control and execution of work
¢ Ability to work in a team with other engineering and science disciplines
¢ Good Communication and customer liaison skills
¢ Practical 'hands on' laboratory test, circuit construction and measurement experience
¢ Knowledge of device drivers and communication protocols (e.g. I2C, SPI, USB, Camera Link).
¢ Experience of hardware design using FPGA components
¢ Experience in designing with video bandwidth op-amps for low noise applications
¢ Experience of working with Analogue to Digital converters
¢ Experience of working with high level hardware description languages such as Verilog, and VHDL
¢ Experience in undertaking component selection and de-rating analysis
¢ Familiarity with integrated design tools such as Quartus® II/Prime software, Lattice Diamond
¢ Familiarity with tools such as HDL designer and ModelSim
¢ Analysis of hardware designs to determine the optimum FPGA solution - This would include determining pin allocations, considering timing constraints, anticipating the required code block size
¢ Experience of porting intellectual property (IP) functions and subsystems into an FPGA
¢ Ability to work to recognised standards, such as MIL-STD and IPC-610 specifications
¢ Practical soldering/workshop skills
¢ Ideally experience of working in the Defence Sector
¢ This is mainly an office based role using Display Screen Equipment but you will also work in a development lab and occasionally in a production area in a clean room environment.
¢ Working to tight deadlines either on a regular or ad hoc basis will be required.
¢ Occasional travel within the UK and abroad with overnight stays may be required.
¢ The nature of the tasks involved means that any candidates applying for the position must be capable of achieving UK Security Check (SC) clearance, which normally requires candidates to have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.
