A Lead Systems Engineer is required to join the Integrated Mission Solutions (IMS) business group, within the NATO JEWCS Integrated Product Team (IPT), based out of the Southampton office. This is a Prime Contract IPT, with the solution being provided by a small number of major sub-contracts. NATO JEWCS (Joint Electronic Warfare Core Staff) is the provision of a realistic electronic environment (radar and communications jamming, simulation and surveillance equipment) for NATO units under training.
Key Responsibility Areas
The role will require leading the systems engineering activities across the project and candidates should therefore be experienced in all phases of the systems engineering lifecycle as well as associated lifecycle stage reviews. Candidates should have a strong aptitude for leadership, problem-solving and decision-making, and the ability to cope with significant levels of design complexity and uncertainty. The Lead Systems Engineer will work alongside the project Chief Engineer to support the development of the technical solution on behalf of the Contracting Authority (CA) as well as supporting the technical interface between the CA and sub-contractors, ensuring the solution delivered will meet the agreed cost, schedule and performance requirements.
The role includes responsibility for delivering the overall architecture for the NATO JEWCS Training System and for ensuring the integrity, compliance and safety of the delivered design. The Lead Systems Engineer will work as part of a multi-disciplined project team in close partnership with the Chief Engineer, IPT Lead, Project Engineering Manager and other key stakeholders, including the technical teams of subcontractors in the delivery of the NATO JEWCS solution.
Candidates should be familiar with working across the full product lifecycle as well as having a strong aptitude for technical leadership, problem-solving and decision-making, and the ability to cope with significant levels of design complexity and uncertainty. The role will require the development of excellent working relationships with customers and suppliers; an element of travel within the UK and abroad is to be anticipated.
The role is based in Southampton, with frequent travel to Luton, Bristol, Bournemouth, and Yeovilton, as well as some ad-hoc overseas travel as required. This is a full time role with some out of hours and extended working hours anticipated as required.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
You should have as a minimum an undergraduate degree in Engineering or related scientific discipline, alongside proven experience of:
o Developing electronic systems and software architectures, particularly RADAR and EW domains
o Leading the product design, development and delivery activities
o Influencing requirements and design decisions, both internally and within a customer environment
o Experience of working across the full engineering lifecycle for multiple products / platforms / customers
o Tailoring, implementing and leading engineering lifecycle processes and reporting on key measures
o Significant team leadership and mentoring
o Planning and coordination of personnel and technical activities
o Working with and influencing internal and external stakeholders
o Developing and executing engineering plans, including the capture and management of risk
o Provision of cost/schedule estimates and performing peer review for others
o Manage and deliver WPs to cost, schedule, and quality requirements, iaw engineering processes and engineering plans
o Participating in the engineering design review process as an authority or independent assessor
o Manage the workload and performance of team members
o Manage the Team's capability provision (size/skill/experience)
