Mechanical Design Engineering Manager Bay Area, CA, USA $120-150k + benefits
This is a new and exciting opportunity to join an expanding technology company in the Bay Area. The company is involved with the design, development, manufacture and support of sophisticated automated capital equipment used in the electronics manufacturing industry. The role involves a mix of hands-on engineering work (system and mechanism design) coupled with technical and personnel management responsibilities (typically 60% technical and 40% managerial).
More specifically you will lead a team of engineers (c20 - varying experience levels) to design and develop innovative automation, cleaning and optical inspection system products for the hard disc drive (HDD) industry.
You will be responsible as a functional hands-on manager for system and mechanism design, design leadership, and Engineering Controls management. Additionally, this position will help develop internal operating procedures, design guidelines, and design reviews for the mechanical design function within the department; leading toward standard design practices and reduced product design cycles.
The ideal candidate would be a lead engineer or team leader (looking for the next step into management) or a current engineering manager (that remains hands-on) with a background in the design of automated / robotic equipment, ideally for cleanroom environments. Those involved with the development of equipment for semiconductor process applications would be of interest (e.g. Sputtering, Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), Optical Inspection, etc)
Typical Responsibilities (not exhaustive): " Organizational management of the Mechanical Engineering department " Directing the design, development, and test functions of mechanical and electro-mechanical devices and systems " Resource allocation, ensuring design quality, cost optimization, installation and maintenance friendly design " Applying advanced knowledge of mechanical design/engineering principles to design products (robotic mechanisms, instruments, motion controls, tools/fixtures, cleaning processes, optical inspection devices, etc.) " Evaluation and introduction of state-of-the-art design methods and technologies " Mentor the department personnel, provide training and development plans, monitor projects, support technology road map and company vision in standards and processes. " Engage in cross-functional technical meetings to enhance products reliability and process enhancement to reduce costs
Skills / Knowledge Required: " A degree (B.S./M.S) in Mechanical Engineering or similar with extensive proven ability as a design engineer " Strong design ability with regard to High speed automation systems, electro-mechanical and ideally opto-mechanical, and electro-optical systems " Able to develop technology and concept proposals " Proven technical leadership (either a team leader, mentor or as a functional manager) " Knowledge of the product development process, manufacturing processes, mechanical system integration, and design for manufacturing (DFM) " Excellent communication skills (written and verbal English) to all levels of business units " Use of high end 3D Solid modelling CAD tools (e.g. Solidworks, Inventor, Catia, ProE)
Others (beneficial): " Knowledge of designing hardware and systems for Clean room applications to Class 1 " Good project / program management ability " Knowledge of FEA would be useful " Knowledge of chemical processes and / or optical inspection / optics would be useful
Candidates should be driven, proactive, collaborative, completer finishers that are used to working in intense, fast paced R&D environments.
