What is an RSS feed?

RSS IconThere’s some debate about the meaning of the acronym RSS but we tend to opt for the most popular definition:

Really Simple Syndication.

Feeds themselves are just web pages, read by computers and turned into information that is displayed wherever you, the user, specify. In other words, an RSS Feed is just a way of having regular news (of whatever variety you choose to receive) “delivered” to your computer, WAP, internet-enabled mobile device, etc. You can set up an RSS feed wherever you see the symbol on the right.

RSS feeds allow you to see new content as it is added to any site from which you are requesting a feed, and allow you to channel in all your favourite news, jobs, or other content to one convenient location. It’s a bit like having a personalised virtual newspaper delivered to your computer, with all your favourite sources of news, jobs and whatever else you wish to stream in from any source: be it media websites or sites like ours.

You can subscribe to our RSS feed in a number of ways, including the following:

  • Drag the orange RSS button into your News Reader (a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications)
  • Drag the URL of the RSS feed into your News Reader
  • Cut and paste the URL of the RSS feed into your News Reader

I haven’t got a newsreader!

You need a newsreader to set up an RSS feed. However, you may already have one! Modern browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 and Opera have built in news readers, allowing you to save feeds as bookmarks.

Alternatively, there are plenty of downloadable applications available which can be stored on your PC, in the same way that you download your email using Outlook. We suggest Googling for a newsreader such as FeedDemon or Newz Crawler.

The final option is a web-based newsreader. The most popular of these are Bloglines, FeedZilla, NewsGator, Microsoft Live and My Yahoo!
