iGaming: The Christmas Games Explosion
You probably won't thank me for reminding you, but once again it
is that time of year when we all suddenly realise, its only three
months until Christmas. For many of us, this means drawing up
lengthy present lists for family members you hardly ever see and
being forced to listen to happy Christmas jingles as you wait
tirelessly in shops full of singing Santa's, only to realise that
the person your gift is intended for, will probably neither want
nor like it come Christmas day.
For
everyone involved, or indeed interested, the Console gaming world
at this time of year reaches a peak of excitement, as the games
industry's biggest players get set to release a slew of AAA rated
titles (including Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, FIFA 12, Gears of
War 3 etc.), together with a growing number of casual games, onto
the British gaming public. I myself have already short-listed at
least three 'must have titles' from this years crammed schedule of
releases.
With so many new titles set for release, and each year seeing an
increasing number held back purely for the big end of year
showdown, it comes as no surprise that the Christmas selling season
accounts for nearly half the industry's yearly sales of video and
computer games. This results in a fourth quarter concentration of
high-quality releases producing intense competition in almost every
game category.
With these games becoming frequently more expensive to produce
and with the current generation of consoles churning out
increasingly advanced graphics, larger development teams have now
become the norm. These teams require highly skilled developers,
ready to take advantage of the latest capabilities and deliver
games to strict deadlines and within set budgets, usually running
into the millions. These huge budgets mean that nearly every game
financed, is a gamble and the pressure to succeed is immense.
Opporunities in the iGaming industry
You might ask, what does this mean for us? Well, this
concentration of year end activity is resulting in both video games
developers and publishers relying on the best Producers, Artists
and Lead games designers (amongst other roles) to ensure their
games are released on time and completed to the highest standard
available. Because of this, we are in the perfect position to both
direct and support gaming clients (and obviously prospective
clients) in their need to source the very best talent the industry
can provide.
