Why is social media so important to the travel industry?
Since the beginning of the social media revolution the travel
industry has been at the forefront of engaging and optimising this
new form of marketing so that it reaches its full potential. So why
has social media become such an important aspect of this
industry?
Firstly, the nature of the industry itself complements the
underlying themes of social media. The desire to seek referrals and
advice before booking a holiday is greatly enhanced through social
media networks. Also, travel organisations place high value on
building long term relations through brand awareness and loyalty,
again, made a great deal easier through social media marketing.
Instant communication is vital within the travel sector due to
the erratic nature of foreign country politics, weather and traffic
and social media provides the perfect platform to facilitate
this.
Another key feature is that social media is a brilliant customer
service tool – providing the ability to respond to a single query
whilst allowing everyone to see the answer. Additionally, it
provides the ideal place to connect with and engage with customers
in the online environment.
Whilst hugely important factors by themselves, the benefits
outlined above illustrate that within travel there is more to
social media than building a devoted customer base and generating a
loyal following.
In response to this many of the larger organisations have
recruited candidates solely responsible for social media and this
trend is expected to grow. It is predicted that other industries
will transfer the benefits of social media into their own
environment making social media an absolutely vital part in any
modern business.
