ARM Consulting Learning and Development Forum launched!
Yesterday we successfully launched ARM Consulting's Learning and
Development Forum, an event specifically for Learning and
Development professionals to share best practice, learn something
new, share experiences and issues.
The main topic
for this first event was 'Measuring the Impact of Training
in the Workplace', with a presentation from Paul Harraway,
management development trainer, and guest presentations from Peter
Darke, Managing Director of local company Hampshire Cosmetics, and
Derek Goff , ARM's resident L&D Manager.
It was interesting to discuss the difficulties L&D
professionals share in accurately measuring in £'s the ROI on
training investment, particularly with 'softskills' training.
For example, take a line manager attending a management development
programme - how in £'s can you measure ROI? It's not that simple.
It can take up to three years to see a manager fully develop from
training.
Paul and Derek introduced ROE as an alternative - Return on
Expectation - focussing on what change in behaviour is expected as
an outcome of an individual taking training.
Going back to our line manager, that measure could be how the
manager puts what they have learned into practice with their team -
communications, delegation, motivation, leadership skills, and so
on. Resulting in a more productive team, improved performance,
enhanced customer service levels ... all of which are ultimately
measureable in £'s.
Peter Darke gave an inspiring talk on the learning and
development investment he has made at Hampshire Cosmetics, and the
impact those activities have had on the workforce, culminating in a
huge increase in productivity, teamwork, and more than anything
else - a desire by each employee to be involved in the success of
the business.
The L&D Forum will run on a quarterly basis, each one
focussing on a topical subject. Suggestions for future subjects are
welcomed. Please contact Heather Slade at ARM
