Has Facebook reached its peak? Social Media opportunities

With recent reports emerging that Facebook has suffered its second successive decline in users in Britain and America, many social media professionals are questioning whether the time of Facebook’s dominance within the social networking environment is coming to an end.

Facebook still maintains that it aims to attract 1 billion users (it currently has 687 million) but it has reportedly lost over 100,000 users in Britain in May alone. This statistic is combined with the fact that the once new, unsaturated market of social media is becoming increasingly competitive with the emergence of LinkedIn, Twitter and most recently, Google Plus.

Google Plus is the most aggressive attack on Facebook’s ascendancy within the world of social media due to Google’s already massive online presence. Having identified user privacy as Facebook’s main weakness, Google Plus operates within a much simpler and more confidential environment. Google has also pledged that, unlike Facebook, they won’t use profiling to create targeted ads, with the idea to make users feel more comfortable in their social media domain.

Many are citing a lack of new features to Facebook as the reason for the decline, others believe it has just generally lost its appeal. Whatever the reason, the question remains as to whether this is just a temporary blip in the seemingly unstoppable growth of Facebook, or a more serious issue which competitors such as Google can potentially exploit?

There is no doubt that social media is one of the fastest growing vertical markets out there right now and there are several opportunities for social media professionals at all levels.
