Cloud computing: investement = job opportunities
Cloud computing is a hot topic in the
technology world these days. Even if you're not a technophile,
chances are if you've watched a lot of television or skimmed a
business magazine, you've heard someone talking about ‘the cloud’
as the future of delivering computer applications &
services.

The Cloud Explained
Although it may seem like a recent evolution in IT
networking technology, the concept of the Cloud was coined back
in the sixties by J.C.R. Licklider. Unfortunately for Licklider the
infrastructure to support the concept has lagged far behind.
You can find out more about the origins of Cloud computing on
this informative
slideshare presentation.
There are varying definitions, but cloud computing is
essentially a form of distributed computing that gives users the
ability to tap into a vast network of computing resources through
the internet to complete their work. Sound confusing? In its
simplest form the cloud can offer the ability to store, access and
develop your photos, videos and work documents on any internet
enabled device such as your smart phone, tablet, laptop, PC, or
even TV. This technology meets the increasing demand to access
files on one device that may have originally been stored
separately, on different types of devices.
A slightly more complex definition of cloud computing is
anything that involves delivering hosted services over the
internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories:
Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS); Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).
According to research conducted by analyst firm IDC, the
explosion of this technology will see spending on public IT cloud
services reaching an incredible $72.9billion by 2015.
Organisations Using The Cloud?

Today, organisations such as Google & Amazon have invested
not millions, but billions of dollars developing web based computer
solutions for commercial use. Google have banked their hopes in
offering web based computer applications via the cloud, rivalling
the Microsoft Office package that has dominated the business market
since its launch in 1990.
Organisations like Apple are also jumping on the cloud
computing band wagon with their highly
anticipated iCloud,
which allows users to access all of their content from any of their
Apple devices. Similarly, Citrix is also joining in with the
acquisition of cloud.com.
Cloud Risks
Although the cloud offers promise for savvy organisations,
the concept of the cloud is not without risk, as highlighted
by ARM's IT
security & communications recruitment manager Damian
Hicklin in a recent blog on Cloud Security.
